Melissa Courter, MS, LMFT

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. My story began 18 years ago as a performer in the theatre arts. Through this experience I grew to understand the healing power of the expressive arts. I decided to return to school and focus my skills as a professionally trained theatre actor and as a therapist.  I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in counseling psychology at California State University, Los Angeles.

I have been a practicing therapist for 8 years. Prior to private practice, I trained in Drama Therapy while working in Oakland, CA. Throughout my time there I worked with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship issues, creativity blocks and low self-esteem. I took a special interest in women’s issues, specifically supporting women in embracing their authentically “wild woman” archetypical nature. For the past several years I have focused on working with adolescents and children throughout the community of San Jose, in schools and in groups, bringing about healing and change in our community’s youth.

From an early age I have been drawn to the healing and transformative powers of the arts. I am deeply moved these ways and their ability to penetrate our deepest depths, opening our hearts so that we can heal our wounds. The arts allow us to listen, to hear, and to accept all of who we are. Teaching us to have empathy and compassion for ourselves and others.

I love my clients and feel honored to work with them. I am continuously moved by their stories of struggle, resiliency and triumph.
